Horse insurance

Horse Insurance
What Coverage Do You Need?

Owning a horse or pony isn’t really like owning any other kind of pet. It doesn’t matter whether you ride for fun or whether you compete or show your horse—you will invest a significant amount of money into the animal both in terms of purchase cost and on regular upkeep. Given the size of even a small pony compared to other pets, it’s hardly surprising that keeping your horse fit and healthy can be a drain on your finances. However, if you cover your horse with a horse health insurance policy or some insurance for horses, then you will get some useful financial protection.

With horse illness protection or horse health insurance in place, you won’t need to worry about the costs of treating your horse if it falls ill or has an accident. Most insurance for horses plans will help you out in various ways; even a basic horse insurance policy will help pay your vet bills and more comprehensive horse illness protection plans could give you a load of extra benefits. So, what coverage do you need from insurance for horses?

Common types of horse insurance coverage

There are various kinds of insurance for horses coverage options here. Some will simply give you essential benefits while others will add on a range of additional features that could also be useful.  So, you could, for example, choose from:

  • Medical coverage:  This is an essential element of horse health insurance when you own a horse. Treatment for even a minor illness can incur a large vet’s bill, and just imagine how much it would cost you if your horse needed a major operation! So, look for coverage that protects you against illness and accident.

  • Equipment coverage:  It isn’t just your horse that is worth money but the equipment you use as well.  Be sure to look for policies that will help you out if your tack, trailer, or other equipment gets lost or stolen.

  • Public liability coverage:  If your horse accidentally injures another person or someone’s property then you could well be sued for damages. Public liability coverage will help you manage this kind of situation so it’s well worth having!

  • Personal coverage:  Some horse insurance will also give you some protection in case you have an accident and get hurt.

  • Loss of horse coverage:  Many horse health insurance policies will give you protection against the loss of your horse. So, for example, they could pay out a lump sum if your horse has to be put down after an illness or accident or they could pay replacement costs if your horse is stolen.

Keep in mind that you may need to take out a specialist type of horse illness protection depending on the age of your horse. Many insurers will offer not offer standard coverage to older horses and you may need to buy a special insurance for horses policy (often known as a mature or veteran horse policy). The insurance policy that you get may also need to be chosen on the basis of what you actually do with your horse. If, for example, you compete or show your horse then a standard insurance policy may not meet your needs as it won’t give you the coverage that you want.

If you own more than one horse, then remember that many insurers will give you a discount for buying horse insurance to cover all of your animals which could save you some money. You will also find it useful to compare horse health insurance quotes before buying them; if money is tight, then look for horse illness protection and horse health insurance policies that give you essential rather than ‘nice to have’ coverage as this will also save you some money.

The key thing to remember when buying insurance for horses is that you want the best horse insurance coverage that you can get to protect your animal, but you want it at the best cost. So figure out what you need from horse illness protection and then shop around to find the cheapest insurance for horses options.
